What was difficult and good about working with the kids? How have they changed? What was it like giving the test?

One of the most difficult thing about working with the kids was they most defininently hate doing work after they just finished doing their homework. So, when we come they are just finishing up their homework and don’t want to do anything. So we have to bribe them with things like stickers and games after they are finished. One thing that is good about them is, once they have started they don’t want to stop working. Well, at least in my case. Like when we start, doesn’t want to stop.

Giving the test was good actually. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It was actually kind of fun. She really enjoyed reading the words and finding out the words that matched to the sentences. And once we were finished the test, she wanted to try the higher level words and got several of them right. It was kind of amazing watching her get the words right.

describe how you can or have used one of these leadership skills at Trevor’s Place?

by ahicks March 15, 2010

Well, so far I have been very caring. I have really been caring to her and showed interest. I try really hard to get her to do her work and pay attention. I guess, I have been kind of intelligent too. By the way I handle things with her. I use certain strategies to get her going. I sometimes use this guilt thing where I tell her she will make me feel bad if she doesn’t live up to her standards. I also have told her I can down grade her to her grade work. But, anyway, I think that I have made sure that she knows that I care about how she does. I make sure she knows how to do everything that she is supposed to know. I make sure she knows more than that. I try to make her homework more fun. I try to keep her interested by changing word problems or changing words around so she will understand. But, most importantly, I make sure that she is enjoying what she is doing during the time that I am there with her. I want to make the most of the time that I am teaching her how to do things.

Trevor’s Place

by ahicks February 1, 2010

The first time we went to Trevor’s Place, I was kind of scared. First off, I couldn’t remember any of their names. Plus, they looked like they didn’t want to see us at all. And, after I started reading to one of them, they looked really bored and tired. Like he wished I wasn’t there. So, then we started coloring and they started getting more upbeat and happy. The one girl that I hung out with the most was Samiya. She was so cute! She was so happy and ready to play around. She reminded me what I was like when I was five. She loved to color and talk. She loves to talk. She likes to scribble-scrabble too. She also likes everything to be hers. She kept taking crayons from the bin even though she already had like the whole entire thing. She was really good at Sorry too. She was so cool. All in all, the first time was great.

What Do I Think The Kids Will Be Like

What Do I Think The Kids Will Be Like

I think the kids will probably be shy at first. I would be shy if I was meeting someone new and they were going to come and teach me stuff. Hopefully, they would be nothing like the kids at Harding. Anyway, some of them might be excited that we are coming to help them with homework and stuff. Hopefully, some of them will be excited. You can only hope they will be nothing like the kids at Harding. I think the reason we are going to help these kids is it can make a difference. This is going to help them with their education and open up new doors for them. It will help them be better learners. This is really important because they will feel better about themselves and have more self-esteem because when they go to school they don’t have to worry about not knowing what they are doing.
